What two decades in BC real estate taught me about helping people move

By Jason Luke  ·  May 22, 2026

When people ask how long I have been doing this, I usually give the numbers first. Seven years in the Vancouver market, then thirteen here in Prince George, so a bit over two decades in BC real estate. The honest truth is that the years are not really the point. What experience buys you is having seen the same situations enough times to know where they tend to go.

The job is mostly life transitions

Real estate looks like it is about houses. Most of the time it is about a change in someone's life. I have helped first-time buyers sign an offer with shaky hands, families outgrow a starter home, investors put a second and third property together, and people relocate for a job they were nervous about taking. The house is the visible part. The decision underneath it is the real work.

Why I went and earned my SRES designation

Some of the work that means the most to me now is helping older homeowners and their families through the next chapter. That is why I earned the Seniors Real Estate Specialist designation. For a lot of seniors, selling is not a transaction. It is leaving the house where the kids grew up and decades of life happened, and that deserves more patience and more listening than a standard sale. It helps to have done it enough times to guide it calmly. If that is where you are, I go deeper on it in my downsizing guide for seniors.

What I have learned to do first

Early on I wanted to talk about listings and prices right away. Now I start by listening. Before we get to square footage or strategy, I want to understand what you are actually trying to do and what would make the move feel like it worked. The answers to that shape everything that follows, and they matter more than any feature on a listing sheet.

What does not change

Markets move. Rates climb and fall, inventory tightens and loosens, and the advice shifts with them. What does not change is that you are making one of the biggest financial decisions of your life, and you deserve straight information to make it with, even when it is not what you hoped to hear. After more than twenty years, the part I still like best is helping someone move into the next stage of their life with a bit more confidence than they walked in with.

If you are thinking about a move, whatever stage you are at, I am happy to just talk it through. You can read more about my background or reach out whenever you are ready.
